Dr. Vidya Limaye, PhD, P.Eng.


Vidya is the principal and lead structural engineer of SHM Canada. He has inspected, designed, and evaluated several marine structures and bridges for CN, HRM, NSTIR, and PWGSC. Vidya holds a PhD in Structural Engineering from Dalhousie University, and has over 47 years of engineering and project management experience in heavy civil engineering construction, marine structures, bridges, and structural health monitoring (SHM).

Structural Health Monitoring

Dr. Limaye has been involved in the field of Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) since 1999. He has successfully led the design and implementation of several SHM projects that include the Halifax Metro Centre, (roof structure monitoring for snow and entertainment loads); Canso Canal Sector Gates (underwater monitoring to investigate excessive deformation of certain structural members); Princess Margaret Bridge, Fredericton, (to assess the effectiveness of post-tensioning of bottom chords of main trusses); Madawaska River Bridge No. 2, Edmundston, NB, (risk management during construction adjacent to pier foundation); and a steel arch culvert in Corner Brook, NL (instrumentation, data collection, and shape monitoring during and after construction. 

The projects currently in the implementation stage are: AAR-induced expansion of a reinforced concrete cope wall at Fairview Cove Container Terminal, installation and operation of an SHM system to monitor the aforementioned, and SHM systems for three radar tower structures in Nunavut and Northern Labrador.

As lead author, he has presented several papers on the field application of SHM at national and international specialty conferences.
